Description:

Doris Duke’s Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art is the first exhibition featuring Duke’s five-acre Honolulu estate and its collections to audiences throughout the continental United States.

The exhibition shows how Doris Duke’s fascination with Islamic art and her extensive travels in Muslim countries became a lifetime fascination. She also worked with a wide variety of individuals including scholars, dealers and artisans.  Her travels are shown through photographs, films, correspondence  and other objects and include her 1935 around-the-world honeymoon trip.

The creation of Shangri La and the carefully planned surrounding landscape and interior design is documented through photographs, both historical and newly commissioned works by Tim Street-Porter, drawings, and a newly created architectural model.  Sixty objects are mixed with historic photographs and show how the house, Shangri La, and Ms. Duke’s collections (ceramics, textiles, paintings, tile panels, and full-scale architectural elements) work together.

This exhibition was organized by The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, which is also providing generous support for its presentation at UMMA and national tour.

The University of Michigan Museum of Art is open:
Tuesday – Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm
Sunday from 12pm to 5 pm
Closed on Mondays
Admission is always free but a $5 donation is appreciated.
