Description:
Billed as the “Last Great American Roadhouse”, the Stanhope House is an institution in the town. Built in the late 1700’s, it was once a stagecoach stop, tavern and post office before firmly establishing its reputation as the place where blues legends got their start. Some of the greats who have graced the Stanhope House stage include: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon.
It was closed for a couple of years due to a transfer in ownership, but today, the Stanhope House is still jammin’. There’s live music every night, and some nights there’s no cover charge. Recent acts featured at the Stanhope House include: New Riders of the Purple Sage, Commander Cody, Billy Hector and the legendary Johnny Winter. Because alcohol is served, patrons must be 21 or older.
Food is also served. The menu is limited and typical “bar” food, but if you want to grab a quick bite, you can get a great burger or sandwich.
