Description:

We just feel like the “have to try” place in Guthrie is the Stables Cafe.  Originally the Tallman Livery Stables in 1889 when Oklahoma was just being born, the Stables Cafe holds down the southwest corner of Division and Noble, the crossroads of Guthrie.  Just history of the building is intriguing as you can still see the bones of the livery, then garage, now cafe.  But that’s not all, the Prather’s have collected American signage and memorabilia and displayed their collection throughout the cafe!  Just tonight, I noticed a vintage nut cabinet with the rotating tray for hot nuts but they are using it to sell homemade cookies as you leave.  A huge vintage bakery cooler displays the cakes and pies for dessert, tho’ I’ve always been way to full to partake of dessert!

Known for their barbeque, they have a barbecue buffet line on the weekends so you can really indulge.  I think their signature onion “rings” are awesome with the barbeque brisket.  You always get a giant pile of what I would call onion strings. (always have to take some home and reheat in oven later).  Servers are happy to bring a cup of Ranch dressing to have with you “rings”.

The locals love it and visitors are treated to some local flavor… and we all come away full and happy.

From the Author: As we said above, you've got to try it. But we always advise, go in and get ordered because it does take a long time to get your food. We like to go there with friends that we plan on spending the evening visiting with. Then you don't mind the wait. Gary's favorite is the Hickory Burger and mine is the Brisket Dinner. I love their coleslaw and their beans. It's all good but the best is the barbecue sauce and the onion "rings".
