One of Reedsburg areas best kept secrets is located on 128 acres of woods just under 3 miles outside of town. Owned and operated by the local school system, The Hartje Nature Center offers some of the county’s best, most private hiking trails in a secluded and unspoiled environment.

The trail system meanders through the woods on a nice mix of terrain including some flat areas with rolling and high hills, some with rather steep climbs. The trail system is maintained for hiking with several interconnected loops that allow you to pick your routes based on almost any skill level from easy to strenuous. In the winter they occasionally groom the trails for skiing and they are also open for snowshoeing.

It’s a great place to go to enjoy the seasons and to hear the many different species of birds and animals as you wander along. There are also many different varieties of wildflowers to enjoy during the warmer months. The walk through the woods in the fall can’t be beat with the trees changing color overhead, the rustle of leaves underfoot, and the smell of autumn in the air.
