Description:

The Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center is a world-class art museum tucked in the small coastal town of Rockland Maine that “celebrates Maine’s role in American Art”.  It has the second largest collection of Wyeth Family (N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth) paintings outside of Chadds Ford Pennsylvania. The museum houses one the largest collections of Louise Nevelson sculpture who spent her childhood in Rockland Maine. Additionally the museum features 8-10 ever changing exhibits that focus on other American artists whom have often found inspiration in the rugged coast of Maine hence the museum’s tag line.  The museum campus itself includes the main building, the WyethCenter, the Olson House (where Andrew Wyeth painted “Christina’s World”) and the Farnsworth Homestead, the original home of the founding Farnsworth family.

The Farnsworth Homestead is only open for the summer season and provides docent led tours several times a day.  One of the conditions for the opening of the Farnsworth Art Museum was that the Farnsworth family home had to be open to the public and left in its original condition.  One can truly step back in time and learn the eccentricities of this very shrewd business woman.

The museum is open year round with varying hours.  From June 1st through October 31st, the museum is open seven days a week from 10-5pm with extended hours on Wednesday nights from 5-8pm.  During the winter and spring months the Museum is closed on Mondays and opens on Tuesdays in April, May, November and December.  The historic properties are open for tours during the summer months only.

The museum is part of Maine’s Art Trail and not to be missed if you enjoy American Art.

From the Author: Generally, Monday through Fridays during July and August, the museum offers complimentary docent led or curator tours daily. Monday, Wednesday and Friday tours are offered at 2pm and will focus on one specific exhibit. Tuesdays and Thursdays the tours are offered at both 11am and 2pm and will provide an overview on their “American Treasures” exhibits. Check at the front desk for the season's schedule. It is included in the cost of admission and is a truly wonderful way to get an introduction to the museum.
