The love of Christmas and the appreciation of a historic mansion come together for the holiday season this year with self guided tours at the home of Chester and Clara Congdon in Duluth Minnesota. Their home, now known as Glensheen, will be open for Christmas tours beginning on Friday, November 27, 2015 and continue Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through January 3, 2016. The hours of the tours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The mansion boasts over 30,000 square feet, 39 rooms, 15 fireplaces and will be decorated with 25 Christmas trees, over 500 feet of holiday garland and over 5,000 Christmas lights to wow guests this year. The home includes many of the original furnishings and fixtures throughout the lower level, the main floor and the two floors above. Many of the Christmas decorations are vintage turn-of-the-century items and you won’t see them anywhere else. Your tour begins with hot chocolate in the Carriage House and continues to the main hall of the mansion with the largest of the Christmas trees. Enjoy a Christmas cookie in the kitchen and listen to Christmas music played on the Congdon’s Steinway. You will truly experience Christmas as the original family did. You may explore the attic for an additional charge. Don’t forget to stop in the gift shop for that perfect Christmas gift!
The tickets for the Christmas tours are $15 and children 12 and younger are free with a paid adult. Students at the University of Minnesota Duluth are free with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased at Glensheen’s web site until midnight of the day prior to the tour date. Tickets also may be purchased on site.
Make your plans for that special Mom and Daughter Christmas time together or a special date with your loved one to tour this amazing home this holiday season.
