Charlottesville was not known for great fresh seafood & fish until now.  The Public Fish & Oyster restaurant opened last month to rave reviews.  Yes, like all new restaurants they have a few kinks to work through but if you like oysters, mussels and fish be sure to check out this new addition to the Charlottesville restaurant scene.

When you walk in the restaurant the first things you see (besides the smiling hostess)  are the iced beds of oysters and clams waiting to be shucked.   The owner, Daniel Kaufman, had wanted to open a seafood centric restaurant for quite awhile.  He used to visit the north of England with his family when he was a child and fondly remembers the British fish & chips and other seafood.  The chef, Matt Turner, and Kaufman have created an eclectic menu that will satisfy those wanting fish or shellfish.  For those in your group that do not eat fish (feel sorry for them!) there are other choices on the menu that will meet their needs – steak, pork belly, chicken).

Right now they are focusing on Virginia shellfish but will be adding some from New England and possibly Canada.  Their goal is to always have two oysters from Virginia –  Rappahannocks from Topping, Va, and Sewansecotts from Hog Island Bay, Va were the oysters when we were there.  If they can source ingredients locally they will.


From the Author: This is a great addition to the restaurant scene here in Charlottesville. We decided to try it on a night when we thought it might be slow - we were surprised! On a Wednesday night at 6:30pm the place was very busy. We were lucky to get two seats at the bar - where we watched oyster being shucked while we ate out dinner. The Mussels Mariniere were fantastic and the Rainbow Trout was delicious. Unfortunately no room for dessert.
