Description:

A fine film can offer a great respite from a rainy or blustery, cold day in my world. I love to spend a few hours enveloped in the dark wonder of a movie theatre letting the magic of the films story offer imaginary transport to places I may never see or provide perfect access to the lives of interesting characters, some imaginary and some real. The Fine Arts Theatre, the only one in our downtown area, provides that opportunity in the coolest of settings.

Asheville stands, second only to South Beach Florida, offering a profusion of art deco architecture. This fine downtown structure is art deco at its finest! Cream in color with two sets of glass blocks running from the top of the building coursing down to the triangular marquee reopened in 1997. This theatre has dual auditoriums. One on top and one on the bottom. Total seating is 250 in both locations. Each November, it is home to the Asheville Cinema Festival serving to a showcase the premier of independent film makers of both shorts and full length feature films.

If you are looking for Hollywood blockbusters, this likely isn’t the place for you. If you love Indie films, Art films, the availability of quality viewing long on plot and characterization and shorter on special effects-You’ve found your muse. The seating in the theatre is new and their sound system is state of the art. Coupling all that with the availability of enjoying craft beer (both local and imports) or glass of wine and the profusion of local restaurants whose ever fine aromas will assail your senses as soon as you exit the building — well, this could be just the ticket for your best date night ever.

From the Author: This place is a local treasure owed and lovingly renovated by John Cram. He also owns numerous Art Galleries in Asheville. Right in the heart of downtown it offers such a fantastic location that after all that antiquing, gallery hopping and general exploration of all that Asheville's downtown offers- You can take a break-see a film and finish the day off with a fine dining experience or more shopping all without accessing your vehicle. Can't beat that.
