Description:

You don’t go to the Birdwatcher’s General Store in Orleans, MA just for birdseed, feeders, and the like, though the humble location does have just about anything you might need in that category. Chock-a-block full of bird books, binoculars, clothing, jewelry, CDs, videos, works by local artists, ornaments, carvings, and the omnipresent seed offerings, the store is a haven for avid birders and backyard feeder junkies alike. If you’re lucky, the owner will be on hand the day you visit. He’s a character and a half, so be prepared. Actually you’ll start to get the idea behind this whimsical bird store from the signs out front announcing the daily hours (Mon.-Sat. 9:03 – 5:57, Sun. 10:13 – 5:29) and the number of days left until “Free Hat Full of Potatoes” Day.

Mike O’Connor opened the store in 1983 and has happily been answering bird questions ever since. He writes the popular column “Ask the Bird Folks” for the Cape Codder newspaper and has penned two tomes on birding aptly named “Why Don’t Woodpeckers Get Headaches” and “Why Do Bluebirds Hate Me”.

My husband loves this store and always stops to watch the streaming video of the Droll Yankee Flip Feeder that literally spins under the weight of a squirrel and flips it off the feeder into mid-air. Personally I love the bathroom. The walls are covered with cartoons, photos, signs, and posters that never fail to make me (or anyone else reading them there) laugh out loud. When was the last time you did that in a public bathroom?
