Description:

Beiler’s Grocery is open Monday – Thursday, 7:30 am – 5 pm.  Friday 7:30 am – 6:00 pm and Saturday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.  Closed Sunday and religious holidays.  This shop is basically a nondescript, warehouse type building along a winding back road, and even though it’s located not far off Rt. 30, it’s completely off the beaten path, unless you’re Amish that is.

Beiler’s Grocery is not your typical grocery store, it’s an AMISH grocery store, so what you’ll notice right off the bat is that the parking lot will have more buggies than cars (if any cars at all).  Also, when you go inside it’s not nearly as bright shops you’re used to.  There are skylights to let in the natural sunlight, and for times when that’s not enough, they have propane lights throughout the building.  As you look up the aisles you’ll see the similarities though… rows of shelves stocked with all the staples: toilet paper, cleaning supplies, peanut butter, cereal, etc. etc. etc.  There’s a refrigerator / freezer section at the back (powered by propane) where you can buy milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, sausage, ice cream and the like.  Up front there’s an open refrigerator section with fresh produce.  It’s not really all that different from where the “English” shop, it’s just MUCH smaller and without such a vast number of choices for every item.

At the front of the store where you check out (cash only), there are a number of pamphlets that tell you recipes for making your own bread mixes, cake mixes, etc.; plus other flyers and information about what’s going on in the community.  The Amish are frugal and it’s a great way to save money and eat less processed food.

So if you want see how many Amish families shop, check out Beiler’s Grocery, it’s “normal” and “unique”, all in one!
