Description:

All of us use glass. Not many of us have any idea about its composition or construction. That said, I doubt anyone given the chance as to whether their food would be stored in glass or plastic would choose the later. Glass serves us in our daily lives as very functional forms of storage; mirrors, drinking vessels, windows and prescriptive lens to name but a few. Less thought about perhaps, is glass as an art form. There it can rise to its highest, if a bit fragile, form.

Just to give a bit of information. Lampworking makes reference to a torch or lamp being utilized to melt the glass into a shape. Once the glass becomes more malleable it can be directed into the desired shape to fulfill the vision of its creator. Other terms used for this technique are flameworking or torchworking. This methodology of glass working was the most practiced form in Murano, Italy dating back to the 14th century. Borosilicate Glass or Hard Glass technique is used at Asheville Glass Center.

Glass Blowing is also practiced and taught at Asheville Glass Center. This procedure involves incorporating air into a blob of glass. As portions of the glass become thinner, that part cools faster so it is a technique that involves much practice to fully master.

Asheville Glass Center offers a myriad of classes. They have a very introductory 1/2 Hour Walk In Workshop specifically to provide an introduction to glass work. Paperweights and also a hollow item will be on your leaning agenda. You’ll learn how glass takes on color because in making your piece, it is part of the process. 2300 degrees looks scary but with the able assistance of Asheville Glass Center you will take it on creating a unique piece, all of your own making. From the Author: When visiting a new place while-hence experiencing the need to procure and bring home souvenirs-almost anyone would rather have a cool piece of glass made by you than a t-shirt.
