Abe’s Buggy Rides was established back in 1968, making it one of the earliest Amish attractions and buggy rides in the county. Hours are Monday – Saturday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, closed Sundays. They do not take reservations.
What sets Abe’s apart is that ALL their tours are private tours. You can choose the length of your tour… a short 20 minute tour if you just want to get a quick feel for what it’s like to ride in an authentic Amish buggy. Or there are some longer rides to choose from, some that stop and an Amish home or business and give you a chance to learn more about the Amish culture first hand.
Abe’s drivers are all very knowledgeable about Amish and Mennonite traditions, and being a private tour, you can ask all the questions you want without feeling uncomfortable. If you’re lucky, the driver may even allow one person to sit up in the seat next to him. If you’re REALLY lucky, you may even get to handle the reigns (this would depend on the horse and situation, but it never hurts to ask).
For anyone who learns by experiencing, this is a really fun and enlightening way to learn about the Amish and Mennonite culture that so many visitors to Lancaster County come to see. The sounds, the smells, the feel of traveling as the Amish still do today… it’s a real treat.
