St. Louis Cathedral, with its three majestic steeples, is one of New Orleans’ most iconic landmarks and defines Jackson Square, where it overlooks the statue of Andrew Jackson who was honored here for his victory in the war of 1812. It is the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the country.
The original church was dedicated by Louis IX of France in 1773. After being destroyed by a devastating fire in 1788, it was rebuilt and completed in 1793. The striking clock atop the tower was commissioned in 1819 and its bell was added to the tower at this time. Improvements ensued over the years, creating the beautiful structure you see here today.
The Church is open for tours daily, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It’s well worth stepping
Inside to see the three beautiful altars and imported organ. Self-guided brochures are available at the door for $1.00.
If you’re visiting during the holidays, try to catch one of the Louis Cathedral Concerts that are held in the evenings.
