Description:

The Ann Arbor Art Fairs is really four fairs run at the same time: the Original Art Fair, Ann Arbor’s South University Art Fair, Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair and State Street Art Fair.  It all began 55 years ago, organized by the merchants on South University to add an economic boost to the area while the students were gone for the summer.

The first art fair had 132 artists and covered 2 blocks of south University.  It has grown to more than 1000 artists and will cover 30 city blocks. Each fair is a juried event and every artist must apply and be selected by a jury or panel of their peers, and from this group one is selected to represent an individual fair.  Their work is then featured on the official posters and other memorabilia.

Artists come from all over the US as well as Argentina, Israel, Japan and Canada.  Crowds usually exceed 50,000 people over the four days, so for those planning to attend, it is always a good idea to plan ahead.  There is a shuttle bus that goes around the perimeter of the downtown area, and there are shuttle buses from various locations around Ann Arbor.

The Fair runs Wednesday July 16 to Friday July 18 from 10 AM to 9 PM and Saturday July 19 from 10 AM to 5 PM.

From the Author: This the BIG event during the summer for Ann Arbor and it is always full of people, food, music and artists. I have been many times and always wear comfortable shoes and a hat. It is usually hot and often there will be a rain shower as well. But...it is summer and we look forward to it every year.
