Description:

We have festivals for everything in New Orleans, and the fall, which we in the Gulf South look forward to the way folks in Iowa look forward to the spring, is a great time to stir up a pot of gumbo.  Gumbo is the soul of New Orleans in a bowl.  You can read all about it, you can argue about okra versus file’, you can perfect your roux and brag about your mama’s roux, and here you can get the real deal, right where it all began.

For the sixth year, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents the Treme’ Creole Gumbo Festival November 9-10, 2013.  It’s in Louis Armstrong Park, the heart of New Orleans’ original Treme’ neighborhood and a haven for free people of color, Haitian immigrants, and white New Orleanians since the end of the 18th century.  On the ground where enslaved peoples in New Orleans met to make music, Congo Square, you can hear Glen David Andrews and John Boutte’, both Treme’ heroes (you may know that John wrote the song that became the theme for the HBO show, Treme’).  You’ll also enjoy as many brass bands as you can shake your tail at.

This year experience a first-ever vegan gumbo competition with celebrity judges.  Don’t worry, for all you carnivores, the usual chicken, sausage, seafood, etc. gumbos will also be available to sample.  This festival is for free, and features great music and a vibrant and diverse arts market. This festival is just  like the neighborhood that it celebrates

From the Author: This festival is still in it's early years, so you won't find it crowded. Best to bring a few chairs so that you can sit back and relax for the afternoon. Treasure these new festivals before the word gets out!
