As you travel throughout NE Tennessee you may notice large 8×8′ quilt patterns painted on the sides of barns, buildings and stores. These are part of the Appalachian Quilt Trail which goes from Johnson County Mountain City on the far eastern edge of the state the Celtic Quilt Trail in Houston County, TN.
The Quilt Trail idea was started in Ohio to promote and preserve the agricultural and local history of rural areas. Since then, the idea has spread throughout the US and here in Tennessee there are over 100 locations where quilts are displayed.
All of the locations are on the website so since we can’t list all of them here, I suggest getting a paper map, laying out a route to drive and enjoy exploring the back roads and by-ways enjoying a good meal, good conversation with the local citizens and learning about the history of this very old part of the country.
There are a number of them in Johnson and Carter counties – just over the border from Boone, NC and Damascus, VA. It’s a great way to spend a day and you might end up at the Butler Museum (open weekends during the summer) to learn the story of “the town that wouldn’t drown”.
