Description:

History comes alive in the park on second Saturdays, from 10am to 3pm. Volunteer docents in period dress demonstrate aspects of pioneer life, such as rope making, candle dipping, and old-fashioned log sawing. All those and other activities are hands-on, with kids getting a special kick out of doing these activities themselves. You can also see and learn about spinning, sewing, hat making, and more. Mountain Man Monterey Jack shows and tells all about the trapper’s life in his historic encampment, with animal pelts for all to touch and an 1850 pistol and rifle to look at. Some Saturdays, musicians and game leaders join the fun.

Historic cook  Jennifer, is always on hand to cook food for anyone who attends in period costume. She makes her meals from scratch — over coals, out of doors. She says adults’ eyes light up when her cast iron lids are lifted to reveal the fixin’s of the past– homemade biscuits, stews, and apple cobblers being tasty examples.

The park’s living history activities are included with park admission of $8 per car, with senior discounts. Look for the activities at the Sutter’s Mill replica.

From the Author: The park is just 6 miles from Eden Vale Inn at 1780 Springvale Road, Placerville. The scenic, tree-lined country road that takes you from our inn to the park prepares visitors to travel back in time. We love learning something new at every Living History Day. The volunteers choose subjects and act out historic characters that they are really excited about. Last time we met Reverend Aaron Cool, for whom a nearby town was named. We saw kids excited to take home a piece of rope they had twisted themselves on a simple old-time device with four hooks and a handle. We chatted with a new docent who is studying medicine of the time, and we’re looking forward to meeting this lady doctor on a return visit. And the setting is perfect and tranquil, right by the river.
