Description:

This exhibit hosted by the US Museum of the North is located at a different venue than normal—the Community and Technical College in the downtown area. Community input will include recipes, displays, and pictures of local grown products and is intended to showcase the cultural life of the community itself. For example, if you’re wondering why there are cows grazing in this picture, you would have to know that Creamer’s Dairy delivered milk bottles in the early days of Fairbanks.
The overview provided by the Smithsonian provides a backdrop of our country’s food–both regional and traditional eating habits. The addition of the Alaskan and Fairbanks focus is supplemented by the Co-op Market and the Downtown Association of Fairbanks, both of whom have reached out to the Fairbanks people to ask for their input via recipes and photos.
You will enjoy both culinary and graphic displays portraying our changing culture and tastes through the years here in Alaska. Additional food-related activities will be offered on October 11, with an emphasis on families and food science. When you are looking for an unusual afternoon event, consider dropping by the downtown center for a free education about how food affects our lives. Hours are Monday-Thursday 9-7; Fridays 9-5; Saturday, 9-5.
