Description:

The French Quarter Festival presented by Chevron, this year held April 10-13, bills itself as the South’s largest FREE festival.   Really, the French Quarter itself-2/3 of a square mile, some of which is water- can hardly contain the 800 musicians who’ll play at 21 stages!   Whether you like zydeco, traditional jazz, rhythm and blues, brass bands, funk, or even opera and classical string quartets, you can find something to tap your toe to.   Headlining this year is Dr. John, for the first time since 1987, on Friday, April 10 at 4:30 PM. Catch him, for free, at the Abita Stage on the river-he’s not playing Jazz Fest this year.    65 New Orleans area restaurants haul their pots and pans to the Quarter for “World’s Largest Jazz Brunch!”   Eat shrimp remoulade at Galatoire’s booth without a coat and tie, or wander around merrily clutching a Hurricane or a snowball.   You’ll feel as if you’re at a Roman or Parisian street festival; this year Barracks Street will be closed to traffic, making FQF even more pedestrian-friendly.   FQF began as a way to bring locals to the French Quarter, and it’s still a beloved local event, with almost half the attendees from New Orleans.   There are two kids’ areas, and you can take the Streetcar, the ferries, or RTA buses to get downtown. Smear on some sunscreen, meander down to the Quarter, and enjoy New Orleans’ best:  a historic neighborhood, amazing food, a river breeze, and talented musicians to entertain you.

From the Author: Best to bring folding chairs and set up camp. My favorite spot is on top the levee overlooking the Mississippi River.
