Mississippi is home to a culture and a river that have influenced works of art, writing, and song for generations. Natchez, the first settlement on the Mississippi dating to 1716, is located in the Capital/River Region of the state and is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the Deep South. Explore the variety and richness Mississippi offers and discover for yourself why travelers believe Mississippi most represents your true South. Time seems to stand still here, which is apparent in the many stories and hauntings in the area. While the Historic Antebellum Houses of Natchez, MS stand center stage as attractions, Natchez has an outstanding cast of co-stars including the whole of the downtown area, an architectural phenomenon of which the Devereaux Shields House is part.
Your self-guided jaunt around Historic Natchez begins with complimentary libations, snacks and a southern lagniappe in the historic surroundings of the Devereaux Shields House Bed & Breakfast, so named for the original owner of the property Lt. Colonel Devereaux Shields (1893). You’ll be provided a tour map of town and tips highlighting almost a dozen haunted sites with stories to explore, including some of the finest antebellum homes in the south. While the sites are free to explore, some of the sites have admissions if travelers wish to more fully investigate them.
Historic Natchez can bring a touch of the Old South into your next vacation. Begin your exploration of Natchez and its surrounds by viewing our collection of exciting and informative Natchez Videos (below) designed to tantalize you with all that you’ll come to love about the South. The Natchez area is particularly rich in historic plantations, beautiful Antebellum and Victorian homes and bed and breakfast retreats, all allowing visitors a view of earlier times. The innkeepers of the Devereaux Shields House welcome Field Trip travelers to explore some of the haunted places of the Natchez Region one ghost story at a time.
