Description:

The Springerle House is open Monday – Saturday from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.  This quaint bakery and coffee shop serves breakfast, lunch, drinks and baked goods.  The shop is a friendly, wonderful spot to hang out, gather with friends and feel like you’ve stepped back in time!

The name “Springerle House” comes from their specialty cookie called “Springerele” which is a type of German cookie with an embossed design made by pressing a mold onto rolled dough.

The origin of these cookies goes back to 14th century Germany. Traditional molds are carved from wood and each design tells a story.  And so the process of making these cookies was part of the learning/education process for German families. Parents would teach their children traditional stories and lessons based on the carving and design on each of the cookies. The boys would learn when hand-carving each form with their father; the girls while making, baking and drying the biscuits with their mother.

As you walk in the bakery, the entire left wall is covered with a wonderful collection of the hand-carved molds of all different shapes, sizes and designs.  Many are available for sale.  Also along that wall and along the front of the display case there is a small gift shop of local crafts and coffee-related goodies like hand-knitted coffee cozies!  They even make their Springerle cookie molds into painted Christmas Ornaments… they’re VERY beautiful and make a great souvenir!

Of course, none of this info is meant to take away from the “main event”, the Springerle cookies themselves!!  The L-shaped glass display is filled with a variety of biscuits (designs and flavors) as well as other delectable items for you to enjoy right there in the shop or to bring home with you.  One thing to note, the cookies are dried out and very ‘hard’ – they’re meant to be dunked in your coffee.

Whether you’re stopping in for a cookie and a cup of coffee, to shop for gifts or to have lunch with your friends, the Springerle House is a unique local treasure that won’t disappoint.
