Though the café is open for lunch as well, breakfast is what they’re famous for, and everything we tried was outstanding.

Specialties include a swoon-worthy Bananas Foster Pain Perdu (French toast topped with rum flambéed bananas and raisins), tasty Eggs Cochon, Eggs Blackstone and BBQ Shrimp. The menu is wide-ranging and even standards, such as omelets and oversized pancakes, are anything but. Deciding on what to order is not easy!

The Ruby Slipper is owned by a young couple that started the restaurant because they wanted a neighborhood place where they could hang out. This Canal Street location—in space once occupied by a five-and-dime store—is now one of four Ruby Slippers throughout the city.
