Description:

Gourds in their many shapes and sizes have been used for hundreds of years in the rural South for utilitarian purposes and as a canvas for painting and wood burning. The Gourd Place celebrates this history and brings the beauty and functionality of the gourd into our modern world.

This unique attraction is an artist’s studio, a retail shop, and a museum all under one roof. Partners Priscilla and Janice have created a very unique niche for themselves in the astonishingly varied world of pottery that exists in North Georgia. They have created (and patented) a system for creating one-of-a-kind ceramic pottery based on the natural designs and shapes of gourds. Each pottery piece carries with it the natural textures of the gourd mold.

The retail shop focuses on the different products that are available, from small soup bowls to large multi-purpose trays. The organic shapes of their pottery are very unique and blend with both a modern or traditional design aesthetic. In addition to their pottery, they also feature a variety of gourd art forms and functional gourd pieces. The museum features over 200 examples of gourd art from around the world and includes historical recreations as well as original pieces of contemporary gourd art. Admission to the museum is free.

From the Author: One of the owners of The Gourd Place, Priscilla Wilson, has written a book – a memoir – called "Gourd Girls". It tells the fascinating and unique story of how the two women founded the business that went on to become much more than a livelihood. Their shared journey eventually led them to discoveries about themselves, their friendships, and the beautiful area of the country in which they choose to live.
