Description:

Webster defines a dory as “a flat bottomed boat with flared sides used for fishing”.  Being on the Niagara River nearly at the mouth of Lake Ontario and just south of Old Fort Niagara, fishing was an important part of the economy and commerce was handled at the Trading Post.   The dory in the front window and Jake, the carved wooden fisherman in yellow slicker created by Bill Suitor (the rocket man) and standing just outside the door,  welcome you.  He gives just a hint of the wood carvings and other hand crafted items local artists have on display inside.

This area of Western New York seems to have a plethora of artists, writers and crafters and recent years has seen an influx of small shops offering the hand crafted items to the public.  The Dory may be a small shop, but it contains a lot of wonderful one-of-a-kind items.  The dolls in vintage dress on the shelf above the silk screened Youngstown T-shirts are quite beautiful in their finery.  Books and note cards on a table with little carved “Wood Book”  and Youngstown YNY bumper stickers invite you to pick them up and scan a few pages.  Handmade scented glycerin soap curls in glass boxes make you think of elegance for your bathroom.

Maps of the historic Town of Porter, local nature photos taken when the light is right (as opposed to when you tried to take the picture), paintings, smaller wood carvings just right for book shelves, jewelry, painted glass, lighted glass blocks, scarves by a local Tuscaraora woman, all vie for attention.   There is an artists workshop “behind the scenes” in the shop and you just might be lucky enough to meet an artist or two while you are there.

New this year, you can rent bicycles and  kayaks from The Dory.  The kayaks will be ported to Lewiston and put into the Niagara for you and will be collected a few hours later up at the harbor in Youngstown.  The bicycles can be used to visit the area or to take the bike trails around the area (maps included).  Call them for further information.
