Description:

If you had an English literature class in school, then chances are, you studied Shakespeare at some point or another. The Bard’s name may elicit memories of boredom and dry recitations, but that’s only because Shakespeare’s plays are meant to be performed, not read. In Staunton, VA, not only can you watch a Shakespearean performance, but you can experience it as well.

The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s original Elizabethan theater. In holding with the traditions of the original theater, you’ll noticed a few things at the American Shakespeare Center (ASC) that are quite different from most modern-day productions. First of all, the lights remain during the entire performance, offering a familiarity between actor and audience. Second, there are no special effects used. All sound effects are created by hand, and all music is acoustic. Third, there are stools sitting directly on either side of the stage, which can be claimed by audience members who wish to enjoy the action from the actor’s point of view.

From Romeo and Juliet to Othello to Hamlet, the ASC covers it all with immensely talented and memorable performances that you certainly won’t want to miss.

From the Author: I love the performances at the Blackfriars. These professional actors bring Shakespeare to life in a fun and engaging way, even if you’re not familiar with the dialect. The ASC doesn’t only perform Shakespeare, however, and one of my personal favorites is a non-Shakespearean, one-man holiday show called “The Santaland Diaries.” If you’re around for the holiday season, it’s a must-see!
