Description:

Shunpike Dairy, formerly known as Tonelwin Farm has been run by the same family for three generations and they have been certified to sell raw milk in New York since July of 2010. Dutchess County is home to a number of dairy farms that were started up during the civil war when the Borden Company opened up in Wassaic NY, a hamlet of Amenia and figured out how to preserve milk in a can. As I’m told, it was a big part of keeping the soldiers in the north healthy, so there was a huge need for lots of dairy farms here.

Shunpike is one of the few remaining dairy farms in their town. They milk about 30 cows a day and sell two-three tanks of raw milk every weekend. You can bring your own bottles or purchase bottles at the farm. I’ve been told that raw milk tastes delicious and some people that are lactose intolerant or allergic have no problems with raw milk. We have visitors from out of town that bring their empty bottles, ice packs and coolers with them so they can stop at Shunpike and get their supply of raw milk to take home.

You can visit the farm, meet the cows and watch the milking. A gallon is $6 if you bring your own container, half gallons $3 and quarts $2.

Open Thursday – Sunday.
