Leaving Fair Play Rd. onto the long shared drive up and over hill and dale you will arrive at one of the finest wineries in the Fair Play Appellation; Shadow Ranch Vineyard and Winery. There’s a reason for the name as large oak trees provide an abundance of shade in the front of the tasting room so you can enjoy your picnic and a bottle of wine on great summer afternoons. Once at the tasting room you will be awed by the scenery of the Fair Play Valley.
In the tasting room Sam Patterson’s, owner/winemaker, father made the gorgeous tasting bar and back storage cabinets. The woodwork is exquisite: detail upon detail with the closest attention paid to the joinery. There are no flaws in the finished product.
That same attention to detail is what makes Sam’s wine so great. He has perfected the art of wine making, so stop in to enjoy some of their exquisite wines. During their tasting hours, Friday thru Sunday, 11 – 5:00pm, you will be able to taste their wonderful Sauvignon Blancs, Zinfandels, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and two red blends: the Sheriff and a dessert, La Puerta. The prices range from $10 to $44. A great value, no matter which wine you select.
From the Author: I took this photo one afternoon recently while enjoying lunch, wine and good friends under the shade of the oak trees. Lucinda and I have loved Sam's wine for years and and will for many more. Sam's not in the tasting room as often as he'd like 'cuz he's got many other things to tend to; like the vines, the barrel room, the winery and of course making wine. When you meet Sam you'll understand why we think he's just one great guy and a wonderful wine maker.
