Description:

A museum with the mission of preserving the history of Sandwich and its contribution to the glass industry. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company produced glass in a stunning array of colors. During the mid 1800’s, Sandwich was a major producer of pressed glass and, as the community grew, the town became known as the Glass Town.

After the Civil War, as the glass industry in New England changed: the glass factory in Sandwich began to produce finely blown and engraved glass for a more elite clientele in an effort to be competitive in the industry. For many years attempts were made to recapture the towns prestige in the glass industry. However, by 1944 there was barely a trace of the industry in Sandwich.

Fortunately, the Sandwich Historical Society, which later became the Sandwich Glass Museum, preserved this important period in the town’s history. Visitors to the museum can experience the history of the oldest of Cape Cod’s villages as told through exhibits, glass blowing demonstrations, and film.

From the Author: The collection of Sandwich Glass housed in this museum is amazing. The interactive exhibits really bring the history of Sandwich to life. My husband and I have been members of the Sandwich Glass Museum since moving to Sandwich a decade ago. We visit the museum often to enjoy the exhibits and events that are held there.
