Just past the first turn off for Fair Play on Mt. Aukum road heading south from Somerset, CA, tucked into the trees is Retiredice Alapcas Ranch. Paige Romain handles about 80 alpaca daily; escorting them from the barns, feeding, breeding, birthing and putting them to bed each night. You might ask why she has to put them to bed each night. The answer is the alpaca are a mountain lion delicacy. The alpaca can NOT defend itself, so their human Mom & Dad must put them to bed each night. In the above photo you can see that the alpacas are extremely friendly; here they have just been sheared of their fleece. The alpacas are great show animals and breeders sell their animals for good sums of money. To be in the alpaca business you must love animals and be dedicated to their well being; they become your lifestyle.

Paige has a retail shop with lots of alpaca products: hand spun yarns, woven blankets & scarfs, hats, sweaters,  finger gloves and full size hand gloves. Socks are absolutely wonderful. If you have had wool socks you know how warm the are. Alpaca socks are warmer, softer and yet they don’t make your feet sweat. Paige’s shop is really a fun spot to shop.
