Description:

Race Point Lighthouse is located at the elbow between Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach in the Cape Cod National Seashore Provincelands. The surrounding body of water is known as the “the Race” by locals and is a popular fishing spot. This is also where Cape Cod Bay meets the open Atlantic.

The Lighthouse was built in 1876 and restored by Sylvia Walker, light keeper, and her family in 1996. Race Point is an intact Light Station and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the lighthouse is operated by the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation. The third Sunday in May each year is Mariners Day, where anyone can take a free ride out to the building and have a tour of the lighthouse, keepers house, and Whistle House, which was used as a fog signal building.

The light keepers cottage was lovingly restored to to have a feeling of the era of the 50’s. Today Sylvia and her husband Jim continue to preserve these important historical buildings along with many fellow volunteers.

The lighthouse is open to the public on the first and third Saturday of the month all summer long. You will need to have a four wheel drive vehicle and a overland permit form the Seashore to go out to the lighthouse on your own or you can call Art’s Dune Tours in town for a lift.

From the Author: The lighthouse is one of the most overlooked places of interest in Provincetown. It is approximately an hours' walk from Race Point Beach to here or a 15 minute drive by oversand vehicle - well worth the effort!
