Description:
Sometimes all you really want is breakfast-forget that it’s three in the afternoon, after all, you’re in New Orleans and you probably just got up. The Please-U Restaurant in the lower Garden District will always hit the spot. And it has hit the spot, so to speak, since it opened Thanksgiving Day 1946.
It’s still got diner-style seating and a counter too. Nothing much seems to have been updated, but we like places like that in New Orleans! It’s funky, and a great spot on Mardi Gras Day to take in the sights. The menu goes beyond breakfast with lunch specials which might include soft-shell crabs, shrimp Creole, crab cakes, and of course, red beans and rice on Monday.
And the Greek owners don’t overlook their own cuisine: the Greek omelet, with feta, remains on the menu, along with Greek salads and gyro sandwiches are delicious. The waitresses know everybody; it’s the kind of place that attracts a regular following, and the coffee gets refilled quickly. Portions are huge, prices are low, and it fills a niche between upscale St. Charles Avenue dining and fast-food establishments that dot that area of the Avenue.
Atmosphere abounds, but not the kind you find at Commander’s Palace, not too far away in distance but oh-so-far away in spirit. Open Monday through Saturday, 6AM-6PM. No website, but give them a call if you have any questions!
