One of the best things about winding up the coast of Maine are all of the small communities that you visit.  Most of them will have a General Store near the center of downtown which mirrors the fabric of the community.  The Owls Head General Store is such a place to the small coastal town of Owls Head Maine.  Situated right next to the post office and on the way to the Owls Head Harbor is this local landmark.  Although it is the closest store for the newspaper, a cup of coffee or to pick up a gallon of milk, it is also the home to the “Seven Napkin Burger” which was named by the Food Network as the “Best Burger in Maine”. It won’t disappoint nor will any of the other sandwiches that they sell.

They sell other burgers other than the “Seven Napkin Burger” but really why bother! They also sell freshly picked crab rolls, lobster rolls and homemade fruit pies and whoppie pies.  Everything is cooked to order so be patient.  Just sit back and enjoy listening to the hum of conversations about the local politics,  lobster harvest and of course the weather. Inside dining is limited to a few tables (prior to the most recent renovation most tables were in the canned food aisle so you might have to “pass the grape jelly or a can of corn” while you were enjoying your burger!) and some colorful picnic tables outside the store.

Hours will vary by season.  In the summer the store is open Monday-Saturday, 6am – 7pm and  Sunday 7am-3pm.  In the fall through spring the hours are Sunday through Thursday, 7 am to 3 pm and Friday and Saturday, 7am to 7pm.  After Labor Day, just plan on visiting the store for lunch!
