Old Bakery Beer Company, located in the heart of downtown Alton, Illinois, is a substantial small-town craft brewery, boasting 6 beers made with 100% American, USDA-certified organic malts and hops, as well as several beers brewed elsewhere. The pub-style restaurant and tasting room, adjacent to the 9,000 square foot brewery, flaunts a menu of seasonally-rotating soups, salads, and sandwiches. Though not extensive, the menu is varied enough to suit every taste, while pairing perfectly with the beers as well as highlighting the vast array of fresh, locally-grown produce and other goods of the area.

What does beer have to do with an old bakery? The answer lies in the building’s history. A portion of the building started its life as a bakery in the early 1800s, and, after a fire in 1929 and a series of remodels, additions, and changes in ownership, remained a bakery until it closed in the 1980s. Now, in opening Old Bakery Beer Company in 2015, owners James and Lauren are keeping the building’s history alive, starting with the name.
