Description:

Longwood Gardens, once the country home of Pierre S. du Pont, chairman of duPont Chemical and Ford Motor Company, is over 1,000 acres of indoor gardens, outdoor gardens, woodlands and meadows.  It’s probably the best known botanical garden in the United States.

Longwood is somewhere you can visit one day, and a week later it’s a completely different place!  Open year-round, what’s in bloom, wildlife you encounter, the color of the sky and the temperature all contribute to your experience, and make it new each time you visit.

It’s hard to imagine how immense the property is until you begin using your well designed map to make your way through the various gardens and outdoor spaces.  You’ll see every style of garden design, from sculpted bushes, Italian-style gardens, English-style gardens, to a children’s garden, vegetable garden, open meadows and natural woodlands.  There are also a number of unique structures throughout the site that contribute to the environment and experience.  Everything from elaborate fountains and whimsical tree houses to the famed main-atrium building and the duPont home with welcoming wrap-around porch.

The Cafe has terrific homemade food for a delicious snack or lunch, or you can have a sit-down meal at the 1906 Fine Dining Room.

The special events, concerts, fountain shows and fireworks displays are to Longwood like fantastic icing and sprinkles on the most fantastic cake you’ve ever tasted… be sure to buy tickets online in advance because it’s no secrete that Longwood puts on a great show & these events sell out!

From the Author: I still remember the first time my parents brought me to Longwood Gardens as a child. It was one of those trips that we as young kids dreaded at the outset, we were being dragged to some boring adult thing... yuck...! But my attitude was transformed instantly when we arrived, and I remember running from garden to garden with joy and excitement at each new "discovery". "Hurry UP! You have to see THIS...." replaced "How long will this take"! It was a magical moment for me (and probably my parents too, who knew a garden could have such power?!). I'm an adult now, and I still manage to experience that early awe I felt back then, EACH time I visit Longwood... I hope you have a similar experience!
