Description:

There are days that despite the very real dietary no no’s of choosing Southern Fried Chicken….nothing else will do. So, if you’ve come to that point, at least indulge well. There is a little spot over in West Asheville that will be able to hook you up in fine fashion. About as fancy in decor as fried chicken, but every bit as welcoming. The glass front of the building provides great natural lighting nicely illuminating the comfortable sky blue booths for seating. We were very impressed with the wait staff there who were clearly dedicated to helping answer any question you had on their menu and to seeing to it that you enjoyed your dining experience there. These folks also own one of our downtown favorites, Early Girl Eatery on Wall Street. We’ve been eating there and sending guests there for years.

As you likely have surmised by now, King Daddy’s Chicken & Waffles major in fried chicken, waffles and really nice sides. The fried chicken arrives at the table- exactly the piece of chicken you selected- as every red blooded southerner would hope- sizzling hot and loaded with delicious. I had 3 in our party the evening and we sampled both the white and dark selections and all of them were yummy. I can attest to the perfect crunch of the friend green tomatoes and the slow-cooked, well-seasoned enjoyment of the collard greens. There also offer both gluten free options as well as food for the vegans among us.

For this type of establishment, there is a decent selection of wine, beer and a few mixed drinks. Craft beer for those of the more persnickety purveyors and for those that just like beer as it was before the tinkering of mash, barley and other instruments of beer change come into its own-they also offer the old stand by PBR. Sometimes, though the new creations of things are wonderful, you just crave the way things used to be.

Waffles! Now though this particular visit to King Daddy’s was dedicated to feasting on fried chicken, I spotted more than a few waffles leave the kitchen. One couldn’t help but notice them as they were carried from the kitchen to the tables. One, piled high with whipped cream and fresh berries was greeted by its hungry, clearly anxious customer with a satisfied sigh. They looked stellar and our server told us that they can be served with either Vermont Maple or Sorghum for syrup and the items to add on went from fruit to nuts.

This West Asheville restaurant serves eggs, sandwiches, waffles, chicken and their livers and wings and for the salad lover, well, they’ve got that covered too.

If fried chicken or a waffle is sounding like a plan~Go There!
