Description:

The building construction began in 1888 and was completed in 1890 to house the Federal Court House and U.S. Post Office. When the government closed them both, the Jefferson Historical Society bought the building in 1965 to become the home of all the collections the Society had amassed.

In the basement are jail cells complete with bars that hold some of the items belonging to the Jefferson Historical Museum. Behind these bars are extensive firearms and weapons collections.

The building has a total of four floors, including a basement and garret. You’ll see the salvaged bell from the Steamship Mittie Stephens that caught fire and sunk on Caddo Lake in 1869, as well as a large assortment of hand tools and equipment. There is an exhibit containing historical items from the Caddo Indians and the surrounding area. The garret is loaded with domestic items, including quilts, linens, and other historic items used around the home.

Everyone who works at the museum is always very nice and willing to help with any questions you might have. The building also houses local history on properties around town.

The Historical Society is always on the lookout for new and interesting things to add to the collection so you’ll want to go back more than once to enjoy new exhibits.

The museum is open daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. They’re closed New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Entrance cost is $3 to $7 depending on age group

From the Author: From the moment we walked into the Museum we were in awe of the fantastic array of items they have in their collection. In the basement there was an old Barber’s chair for a child that was actually a rocking horse. The old paintings upstairs are impressive; I could have spent hours looking at them and then there is the gigantic gold framed mirror against one wall that I could not stop looking at. The ladies who work there are very helpful when we asked about places to eat and tours to take. Their recommendations were spot on.
