Aaron Hill is owner, winemaker and tasting room staff. He is cellar rat, racker, topper and everything thing else for Illuminare. This one man show is amazing. He started this boutique winery 10 years ago in the corner of the building when it was just a little better than a hovel. The building is L-shaped and he is at the bend of the L, and now is the showcase of Camino. Iumminare offers tastings Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 11-5.
The wine list includes Chardonnay, Seeing Red (Excellent Blend), Malbec, Sangiovesse, Mourverde, Pinotage, J&J Barbera and J&J Zinfandel and the Night Masque Port. Small lot, limited varieties of wines make Aaron’s work manageable for him. The prices range from $19 to $25 per bottle. The Night Masque Port is in a split bottle at $20. There are many wine toys and accompaniments available to purchase.
Enjoy your wine tasting sitting in the loungers and sofa in front of the warm fire on chilly days or out under the pergola and vines on warm days. The place is great for a picnic. In fact during warm weather it is common for musicians to be playing on the patio. Illuminare shares there building with three other wineries that will be in other posts. This is mentioned just so you know there is more then one boutique winery here.
From the Author: Lucinda & I have known Aaron and Cherie Hill since they got married. Both were born and raised in Alaska. After they moved here Aaron starting learning wine making at a mid-sized winery in Fair Play, just down the road from where I live. We have seen Aaron mature as a wine maker, business man, and as a man and father. He started very young and developed into one of the rising stars in the El Dorado County wine industry. Aaron has also turned the building, he being the first to occupy the hovel, into a great tasting room and barrel room. His actual winery is on his property in Fair Play.
