Description:

A gorgeous, gorgeous building inside and out…the Hershey Theatre was a dream of Milton S. Hershey’s transformed into reality.

Conceived in the early 1950’s, it wasn’t built until 1929 and finished in 1933 as part of Mr. Hershey’s “Great Building Campaign” during the Great Depression. As the great philanthropist he was, Milton employed 600 skilled, unemployed workers to construct the Theatre as part of the Building Campaign.

Dedicated in September 1933, the building was a testament to bring the arts and and a wide variety of entertainment to the general public. As those doors opened to the Grand Lobby, evidence of beauty and craftsmanship was apparent.  The liberal use of Italian lava rock and various marbles throughout are breathtaking. The ceiling is lavishly adorned with pastoral scenes, swans, beehives, sheaves of wheat all in bas-relief.

Continuing through to the inner foyer there is more evidence of an Italian flair to the motif, until you reach the main level of the theatre where the theme is revealed to be in the grand style of Venice, Italy.
