At the end of College Road in small strip mall, the proximity of Gulliver’s lends itself to the budget minded crowd: close to the University, with extended hours for the convenience of their customer base. When Barnes and Noble came to town, Fairbanks lost a couple of bookstores, but Gulliver’s has stood the test of time and continues to provide locals with great service—whether you are looking for new or used. Being the only used bookstore in town, the upstairs houses the used books neatly organized into useful categories. We’ve often been able to find titles for a class, or in a particular genre. A perk of donating books to the store is that it allows you to purchase used books at a fraction of the cost (ten cents on the dollar). The bottom floor is packed with a wide variety of new books in just about any genre a large bookstore would carry, along with some interesting tourist, Alaskan, and novelty gifts.

If you find yourself hungry after searching the stacks you can stop by the café upstairs and grab a wrap or smoothie; there are special weekly menu offerings with generous portions. It’s a good gathering spot for discussion or just sitting with that book you found on the shelf.
