Fenton Herriott is a lovely winery in Apple Hill. They have delicious wines that are made by hand. Refreshing chardonnay, complex red zinfandel, and wonderfully not-too-sweet Gewurztraminer. They also craft interesting blends that make you really think about all the flavors that are in each sip. The tasting of most wines is free. They have some reserve varieties that cost $5 to taste, but if you buy any wine then the fee is deducted from your purchase price.
Helene has worked in the tasting room since it opened 8 years ago. She is warm and personable. Her husband built most of the buildings, so it is not only family owned & run, it is family built!
The grounds are wonderful. There is a big pavilion which provides shade in the summer and rain protection in the winter. You’ll enjoy beautiful views. There are two bocci ball courts that you can use any time. And it’s right in Apple Hill with many other wineries and farm stands to visit.

From the Author: Helene let our group taste a 2012 and 2013 Gewurtztraminer, which were quite different. She explained the difference is because 2012 was a wet year, and 2013 was drier. In dry years, grapes have a more concentrated flavor. That is the kind of personal attention and information we love in a winery visit. After setting a spell and enjoying the view, we took home a white port, which is delicious and a little bit rare to find.
