Description:
Falmouth’s Village Green is considered by many to be hallowed ground due to the rich history that surrounds it. The best source for history regarding Falmouth are the Falmouth Museums on the Green run by the Falmouth Historical Society. There are multiple buildings that comprise the museums on the green and various exhibits are provided throughout. Some of the ongoing exhibits are focused on the rich whaling history of Falmouth and Cape Cod and the role of Falmouth in the Civil War. One of the famous past residents of Falmouth is Katherine Lee Bates, author of America the Beautiful, and a video of Falmouths history shares insight into her time in Falmouth. Katherine’s childhood home is located across the street from The Captain’s Manor Inn just off the Village Green.
A current exhibit “Don’t You Know There’s A War Going On? Falmouth and the Home Front during World War II” shares the role of Falmouth in World War II and features a number of military artifacts including various uniforms and arms.
For an informative and fun bit of exercise you can join the walking tours of Falmouth which are offered by the Historical Society at 10 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May through the Fall season.
