If you like history, you’ll love the Fair Play Hardware Store. No one knows for sure exactly how old the building is, but it’s been a hardware store for generations. Joyce, who ran the store for over 60 years, lives next door in the house she and her husband built in the 1940s. She’s now in her mid-nineties and lives alone. Roy McNulty is the current owner and has transformed the store into the “21st Century” by expanding the product line available. It used to be exclusively a hardware store, but has become a well rounded store.
For those wanting to experience the true nature of an old country hardware store, Roy has preserved the quality and great character of the store. What that really means is those of us who live in Fair Play can get that broken spring to the pump house door replaced right here. Their spring for the pump house probably has been sitting on their shelf since our pump house was built, and who knows when that was. The store has almost every kind of screw, nail, nut, bracket, hinge, or clasp you need and many items you don’t need; but they are fun to look at even though there is no longer a need for a lot of the inventory left in the store. Whatever you need Roy can tell you exactly what shelf it’s on and box it is in.
That’s what makes the Fair Play Hardware Store a living museum.
From the Author: The Fair Play Hardware Store saved our bacon on many occasions. Lliterally just down the road, we'd have to buy some forgotten last minute needed screw, bolt or some other unusual item. Living in the middle of the boonies, that's where Fair Play is, one has to plan for trips to get supplies, equipment and building materials when building, since Placerville is 1/2 hour away. That means you are delayed 1 1/2 hour from continuing your work: 1/2 hour to Placerville and another 1/2 back and by the time the big box store employee can lead you through the store to find what it is you need, it's another 1/2 hour. Fair Play Hardware is truly a marvel; they have almost everything and they know where everything is, including that boring auger for the tree that needs fastened up so it doesn't fall on our shed.
