Description:

Asheville has been lacking for a find like this store. Downtown is over ripe with every kind of thing any good tourist might be looking to find. Duncan and York is a store where locals might shop too. A very convenient spot where a lovely gift could be purchased or an exquisite personal item might be found without going to the dreaded mall. Shower caps, scarves, fragrance, delightfully fragrant candles, lipstick extraordinaire, nighties both beautiful and well made & jewelry. If you get thirsty from the walk downtown, well, they’ve got a fix for that too.

I think to begin at the beginning in description of how this gift shop came to be. Two women, maiden last names of Wilkinson & Woodruff, had big dreams and grand ideas to open this store. They decided on their maiden names, yes you guessed it, Duncan and York, as a perfect moniker for their new business. At it’s core, I think ” unique gift store ” would suffice but that simple description would be to sell this place short. Innovative but needed items and constantly in motion would also be good information to add. Nothing static here. Just because you see something there in November does not mean that same product will be present in a month.

In seeking to define this place I was floundering. During my walkabout I noted a local theme. All things Asheville are local. We support local as a community and that presence was strongly felt in this store. Also felt in this store, much like a palpable presence, was personality, warmth, and genuine reception. People can choose to spend their money anywhere but I always feel so much better about doing that when I genuinely like the people whose business I’m helping to build.

Neither Stephanie or Lindsay, the store owners, were present the day I entered but a friend of theirs was. She was helpful, charming, engaging and well versed in all things Duncan and York. She was also a good friend for helping out and a better friend for providing a personal tour lest I miss anything this totally cute shop had to offer. With her help, I didn’t. I hope the same for you. I’ve been in Asheville a long time. My very favorite store, Amore, closed years ago. Finding nearly anything I was interested in buying was never a problem there. I have finally found another place like that. I’ve been waiting a long time.

From the Author: This place is unique. If you need a gift for any women friend...I believe you will find it here. Classy, welcoming and very upscale. A fun haunt!
