Description:

In the center of Dexter’s business district lies a wonderful treasure that’s waiting to be explored. That treasure is the Grist Mill Museum housed in an 1854 grist mill in the town of Dexter.

The Town of Dexter owns the building, but the facility is managed by the Dexter Historical Society. The museum opened in 1967 and has been open every summer since, opening mid June after school closes and then closing in Mid September.

The society has filled the museum with a wide array of artifacts from the town’s past, but you do not have to be a Dexter native to enjoy the many wonderful items on display which include: the barn with an agricultural theme and featuring a restored Dexter milk wagon, an old time kitchen featuring many Dexter made items and a restored grain bin. The main room features multiple displays including a bedroom and living room display, automotive, Odd Fellows, fire department, toys and the grist mill itself.

The building also has nearly 120 signs from Dexter businesses and organizations from the 1850’s to the 2000’s. The grist mill is no longer an operating mill as the town took out the power source in the 1970’s, but the atmosphere of the mill is unmistakeable and the mill machinery and grain chutes have been left how they were when the mill closed in 1965, being the last water powered mill in the town of Dexter.

The museum is open 10am to 4pm Monday through Friday, and 1pm to 4pm Saturdays.

Admission is free but donations are always gratefully accepted.
