Central Grocery is a century-old Italian grocery store whose shelves are lined with top quality products. But it’s not the groceries that are the main draw, it’s their signature sandwich.

This is home to the original muffaletta, named for the bread it is made with—a large, round loaf, studded with sesame seeds that was originally brought over to New Orleans by Italian immigrants. Inside the loaf is a stack of spicy salame, mortadella, imported ham, Swiss and provolone cheese. On top of all this is the store’s olive salad. Each sandwich is cut into quarters, wrapped in paper and ready to go.

This is a huge sandwich (perfect for sharing)—and it packs a wallop of flavor. Like so much in New Orleans, it’s a classic.

Central Grocery is open daily, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
