Description:

Opened in 1975, the Camden Archives and Museum, is housed in a beautiful, old Carnegie Library. Prominently placed on in a lush green lawn and surrounded by old trees, this very inviting treasure awaits your arrival.

Books, microfilm, maps, files, periodicals, general reference materials, letters … genealogists flock to this Archives and Museum as it has the best genealogical research support in the area. The collections of the museum focus primarily on north-central South Carolina, “The Midlands”. Clarendon, Sumter, Lee, Kershaw, Lancaster, York, Chester, Fairfield and northern Richland County are well-represented. Two additional libraries, The Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames XVII are also located here.

Just as the Archives section is impressive, the Museum is equally impressive. The Museum is continually highlighting both permanent and rotating exhibits. Currently, the Ross Beard Gun Collection is drawing visitors from all over the world. From c1550 inlaid with ivory wheel-lock rifle to John Dillinger’s sawed-off shot gun, this collection is amazing. A few other amazing pieces include a miniature gold-plated flare pistol (smaller than a half-dollar), several David Marshall “Carbine” Williams pieces, and Russian spy guns. The current rotation exhibit is The Civil War. It features the role of local Camdenites and their contributions to the war. It offers an updated view of the harsh realities of conflict.

Admission is free.
