A very old building in Aptos Village, houses a very modern intimate bistro. The Historical Landmark plaque in front of Cafe Sparrow reads, “1889 Aptos Grocery and Post Office built by James Leonard and financed by his gold mine.”

Walk onto the wooden sidewalk in front of Café Sparrow. Peek through the Dutch door and you can look right into the open kitchen. The chef and his staff work smoothly and unhurriedly; utilizing delectable fresh and local offerings from farms and ocean around Santa Cruz county; creating the appetizers, salads, entrees, and sweets to be served to locals and visitors alike.

As you step inside the Old Post Office, you are welcomed to several cheerfully decorated rooms highlighting natural surroundings of birds and freshly picked flowers on the tables set for two, four and a few for larger parties.

The friendly wait staff great you, and once seated, present both the detailed menu and the daily specials noted on a chalkboard. There is always a uniquely prepared meat, seafood and vegetarian option, in addition to the prix fixe special, which changes daily, of soup or salad, entrée, and decadent bread pudding.

It is difficult to make a choice. You might look around to see what others have ordered. (I do that.) It all looks, and smells fantastic. Do I get my old favorite, crab cakes and filet? Do I choose from the board? Whatever I end up selecting, I know I will not be disappointed.
