Description:

If you are looking for some interesting creations based on locally sourced ingredients look no further than Brookville Restaurant on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville – find them on the second floor.

Chef Harrison Keevil always serves dishes that are made with ingredients sourced from within a 100 mile radius of the restaurant.  Harrison’s New American cuisine is inspired by what’s fresh and in the markets today – no asparagus sourced from Peru in any of his dishes.   For example:   his eggs, chicken, pork and beef are raised and produced just 5 miles outside of town.  His vegetables and greens are sourced either locally or less than 70 miles away.  The vinegars are from a source just a few miles south of town.  Bacon comes from another great local source just a bit further south.

These great ingredients are reflected in his menu which changes depending on what is available.  This month we enjoyed maple grits with bacon and a slow cooked egg, polenta with a mushroom, onion and green pepper ragout topped with a slow cooked egg.  We had started our meal with the Bacon Fat Popcorn (to die for!), the slow cooked egg with bacon soldiers and the fried oysters (which is the ingredient sourced from the furthest distance).

We have never been able to have dessert as the appetizers and mains filled us up, but we have heard that his bacon ice cream and chocolate chip cookies are divine.

So the next time you are in Charlottesville give them a try.

From the Author: We really enjoy the casual dining at Brookville. One of their main suppliers is the farm across the street from us so we know the ingredients they use are top-notch! One day we will have dessert there - particularly to try the bacon ice cream.
