Description:

One of New Jersey’s last remaining German restaurants, the Black Forest Inn has been dishing up exquisite Continental cuisine since 1978. Chef Heinz, founder and owner, was trained in Europe and has directed kitchens in the finest restaurants across the Continent, including the famous Hotel Savoy, prior to opening his own facility. Today, three generations of chefs collaborate to prepare each selection to perfection.

Eating at the Black Forest is more than just dinner. It’s an “Old World” experience right down to the lederhosen and dirndl-garbed waitstaff. From the first mouthful of food, it’s easy to see why the Zagat-rated Black Forest Inn has been named as “Diners’ Choice” for three consecutive years.

One of my personal favorites is their signature sauberbraten, red cabbage and spaetzle. The meat is so tender, it can be cut with a butter knife, and the flavors are blended to perfection. I like to start off with crispy potato pancakes, which are accompanied by sour cream and applesauce. Not the best for the waistline, but a “not to be missed” experience.

For those who like to sample a variety of foods at one meal, the Black Forest also offers a stellar buffet each Friday. Long tables encircle the main room, and diners can enjoy both hot and cold selections, which include such delicacies as cold salmon, beef rouladen and schnitzellette gruyere. Beer drinkers will be particularly impressed with the wide selection of both imported and domestic brews.
