In America, we have a bit of a love affair with pies. It has been part of our colloquialism for a very long time reflected in statements like, “as American as Apple Pie and baseball” “pie in the sky”…Well, you get the drift. So, it should really come as little surprise to anyone that Baked Pie Company has taken Asheville by storm. If one takes a drop dead delicious, ever so flaky crust and incorporates nearly any kind of confection one can think of between that top flaky crust and its slightly more tender bottom, well, one could hear the angels sing with the right combination.

No matter what would float your boat in pie land; Baked Pie Company is at your service. Not one to rest totally within the realm of norm one can expect a bit more excitement than a simple apple. The public can be fickle and they are always search for the next big thing. These folks get that and weekly, every Tuesday to be exact, they display the cast of characters for that week.

Right now, this very minute as I go to press with this prose they have just taken out a Buttermilk Chess pie. They also recently auditioned a Chocolate Covered Strawberry Pie that screams to be loved. Clearly, a site visit was required to evaluate this new company so on Mother’s Day we skipped breakfast entirely, and once the dishes were completed at our inn, off we went to see what all the hubbub was about.

Clearly, with so very many choices and in order to make an appropriate assessment of Baked Pie Company, we took the liberty of trying what they have dubbed Pie Flight. Just as in the beer industry where one is able to sample many craft beers in very small amounts, so too the Baked Pie Company makes this offer. Your “flight” is served on a round wooden serving board and includes 3 modest slices of the pies you have chosen to be your sampling. Along with this, there will be a scoop of ice cream. The day we went, the offering was either vanilla or salted caramel. Frankly, while it wasn’t as challenging as having to select only pie to enjoy a slice of…. With so many selections…the heat is on and the choices are hard.

The pies are as awesome as they look. Whether you choose some of the house faves like Coconut Banana Cream, Snickers or Apple or you venture into the unknown zones of more creative pie pursuits like Rhubarb Frangipane, Atlantic Beach or Unicorn, it’s a sure bet there is not a bad selection in the lot.

I cannot finish this rhetoric without sharing that the environment is adorable. Good light, homey atmosphere, old-timey books and memorabilia will deliver you to a kinder, more gentle time
